Blast from the Past: Firing of the 1541 Coronado Expedition Cannon Replica
April 4, 2026 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, 1 Burruel St, Tubac, AZ 85646, USA$25 per person
Not fired for 500 years, two bronze cannon lay buried in the 1541 battle site at the Coronado Expedition townsite of Suya, near Nogales in southern Arizona. A replica of the first cannon was made by a gunsmith and will be fired for the first time in public at Tubac presidio. The firing will be preceded by a discussion about the cannon, the making of the replica by the gunsmith who crafted it, and the role of these guns for the expedition.
Dr. Deni Seymour is joined for this presentation by fellow members of the Historical Arms Society of Tucson and by the gunsmith who made the replica.
Join us for this opportunity to hear them speak and experience an exhilarating live cannon firing!

Bridging the Coproduction Gap: Applying Qualitative Data Analysis in Archaeological Practice
April 4, 2026 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
This two-hour seminar introduces archaeologists to the practical application of qualitative data analysis in community-engaged research. Drawing on case studies from the 2024 "People of the Apalachicola System" project and its use of "Community Conversations on Heritage at Risk" workshops, participants will explore how ethnographic methods can be used to capture, interpret, and apply community perspectives in archaeological practice. Through a combination of lecture and guided exercises using real qualitative data, participants will learn how to design focus group discussions, develop codebooks, and analyze textual data to inform cultural resource management and heritage decision-making. The session emphasizes collaboration, inclusivity, and reflexivity to prepare participants to integrate community input into their own research and management efforts.

MIAC Book Club
April 5, 2026 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, 710 Camino Lejo, Santa Fe, NM 87505, USAJoin us for our new bookclub to discuss Braiding Sweetgrass, by Robin Wall Kimmerer (Potawatomi).
Taking place every other first Sunday of the Month in our Docent Library.
Books available for purchase in the Colleen Cloney Duncan Museum Shop
Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings―asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass―offer us gifts and lessons, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

25 Years of Fieldwork in the Bears Ears
April 6, 2026 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
118 Cruz Alta Rd, Taos, NM 87571, USAFree in-person presentation by archaeologist Tom Windes sponsored by the Taos Archaeological Society in the Kit Carson Electric Co-op Meeting Room, 118 Cruz Alta Road, Taos, New Mexico.
For the past 19 years archaeologist Tom Windes has been involved in documenting, mapping, recording, and taking tree-ring samples from intact or nearly intact cliff ruins in Natural Bridges and Bears Ears National Monuments. This talk will cover 25 years of fieldwork in the Bears Ears National Monument, an area of controversy since first established by President Obama, mostly eradicated by President Trump, and restored by President Biden. The fieldwork has focused on recording historic and precontact sites with structural wood because of the impacts of greatly increased visitation and looting, largely sparked by the controversy and outside recognition of Bears Ears’ natural and cultural resources. For the first time, a group of Native American tribes has worked together for years to protect this culturally sensitive area.

Crow Canyon Webinar - Hand-Slab Scrapers: Building Berms with Sandstone Slabs
April 9, 2026 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
High-resolution archaeological surveys near Blanding, Utah have revealed a previously undocumented tool type on the Northern Colorado Plateau—expediently fashioned, unhafted sandstone slabs. We have interpreted these ancestral items as hand tools used to scrape and mound sediments and refer to them as “hand-slab scrapers.” These tools have been found among artificial berm-swale landscapes, and along prehistoric roads suggesting they were used in the construction and maintenance of these features.
This presentation provides an in-depth description of hand-slab scrapers and reports on the experiments using replica tools to create a small berm-swale feature.

Lecture: Lessons from the Fertile Crescent and Beyond
April 18, 2026 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Hibben Center for Archaeological Research, 450 University Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131, USA* Registration and payment of $45 on the New Mexico Cheese Guild website required to attend. Active Maxwell Museum members will get a 25% off discount code. Registration link coming soon *
Join us for this special event co-organized and co-sponsored by the New Mexico Cheese Guild. It will be a captivating exploration of human history through the lens of one of our oldest culinary technologies: cheese! This event traces the 11,000-year journey of dairy pastoralism, from its origins in the Near East to its eventual introduction to the Americas.
Lessons from the Fertile Crescent and Beyond: The Deep History of Cheesemaking and its Arrival in the Indigenous Americas.
Lecture by Dr. Paul Kindstedt (University of Vermont)
What were the crucial prerequisites that enabled dairying and cheesemaking to arise for the first time in the Fertile Crescent of the Near East at the start of the Neolithic around 11,000 years ago? Using the grasslands of the Eurasian Steppe as a focal point, this talk explores the roles of human migration, cultural diffusion, and climatic stressors in the longevity of lacto-fermentation and specifically cheese technology.
This historical framework, in turn, will then be used to examine how these pastoral systems that supported cheesemaking were introduced to the Americas by Spanish colonizer, permanently altering the agricultural landscape of the Western Hemisphere.
After the talk, ticketed guests are invited to a delicious cheese-tasting and an opportunity to meet Dr. Kindstedt.
Meet our Presenter
Dr. Paul Kindstedt is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Vermont and a world-renowned scholar on the history and chemistry of cheese. His work bridges the gap between ancient archaeology and modern food science, offering a unique perspective on how cheese has shaped human civilization.

Crow Canyon Webinar - Ceramics is to Clay: What Pueblo Pottery Traditions Teach Us About Indigenous Environmental Relations
April 23, 2026 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
OnlineThis presentation examines Pueblo pottery as a living tradition and lifeway rooted in the landscape, tracing material and cultural continuities across a millennium and situating pottery within Indigenous Environmental Justice movements that resist pollution and extraction on ancestral homelands. By centering clay as a relational material with cultural, spiritual, and scientific meaning, the work challenges object- and data-driven ceramic studies and reframes pottery as an enduring relationship between people and place.
